Fitting shoes for women

Normal footwear is frequently more "generous" than Spanish or Italian counterparts.

In which case, you may find that you would need to take a larger European shoe size from a Spanish manufacturer than a standard UK shoe.

This shoe size converter advises people that properly fitting shoes can be up to ½ size smaller or larger than anticipated.

Measure your foot from toe to heel, and around the widest part of your foot. Remember that sizing depends on several factors:

  • the shape of the toe. Pointed toes may restrict space for the front of the foot
  • the height of the heel. High heels will force a foot into the toe, making the required shoe size seem smaller
  • the cut and style of the shoe. Ladies with small feet often find that styles with straps help to keep the shoe on
  • the quality of the material. Softer leathers 'give' more
  • whether you are wearing socks or tights, which might make your foot slip in sandals. It is now possible to buy toeless tights to wear with sandals. Avoid trying on shoes in bare feet. Your feet may 'stick' to the insole
  • the time of day that you try the shoe. Feet tend to become more swollen towards the end of the day. It's best to make allowances for that if you want to buy evening wear.
